Nandita Das was born on 7 November 1969, in Delhi. Her father Jatin Das is a famous Indian painter and mother Varsha is a writer. This made Nandita’s life full of ethics and values from very childhood.
She did her schooling from Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, Lodhi Estate in New Delhi. Nandita completed bachelor’s degree in Geography from Miranda House (University of Delhi) and Master’s degree in Social Work from the Delhi School of Social Work.
Nandita Das divorced her first husband, Saumya Sen and then got married to Subodh Maskara, an industrialist on January 2010. She had a baby boy named Vihaan on 11 August 2010.
Career before Bollywood
Being passionate for social work, Nandita started her career as a teacher, from Rishi Valley School. After that she worked with an NGO called Ankur and then for Alarippu, an organization that work towards the education of underprivileged children. Nandita started her acting career with a theatre group called Jana Natya Manch.

Nandita’s debut film was Prakash Jha’s “Pariniti” in 1987. Through this telefilm she influenced the audiences through her small but powerful acting.
Then she did Deepa Mehta’s film ‘Fire’ in 1998 which faced a lot of controversies. After that Nandita worked in many Art and Commercial Hindi films. Movies like Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa, Earth, Bawandar, Four Women, showed the guts and instinct of this robust lady.

Firaaq was Nandita’s directorial debut feature film based upon emotional journeys of ‘ordinary people’ through sectarian violence. The movie was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008 winning over ten international and national awards.

Nandita is a philanthropist, a writer and a social activist who advocate issues of social justice and human rights. She also speaks to campaign for child survival, against AIDS, and violence against women. She was appointed as the chairperson of the Children’s Film Society of India in 2009.
Achievements
Nandita Das is a well known name worldwide through her acting, quality films and innumerable national and international awards. But being a member of jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 was the biggest achievement for, the dusky beauty, Nanadita Das.
The controversial movies have brought both bad and good publicity for Nandita, but being a social activist she is incomparably ‘the best’. Nandita Das is always passionate of making a difference which is evident from her entire life and kind of work she has done in her reel as well as real life.
